About Us
A youth-development organization built around belief.
We walk alongside emerging leaders as they discover who they are, recognize the greatness within them, and build a future filled with purpose and possibility.
Mission
Hands of Joy International develops resilient, purpose-driven young leaders through identity formation, mentorship, leadership education, cultural connection, and transformative opportunities connecting Greater Philadelphia and Ghana.
Vision
A world where every emerging leader knows their worth, discovers their purpose, and has access to the relationships, resources, and opportunities needed to become a confident leader and positive force in their community.
Founder's Story
From Pain to Purpose
Tramaine Pugh, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Hands of Joy International, understands how deeply loss can shape a young life—and how powerfully love, guidance, and hope can help rebuild it.
At nine years old, Tramaine lost her mother and was raised alongside her siblings by their grandmother. During one of the most vulnerable seasons of her life, the presence of a devoted adult gave her stability, strength, and a foundation for the future. That experience taught her something she would carry throughout her life: every child needs someone who sees their potential, nurtures their gifts, and reminds them that their circumstances do not define their destiny.
Years later, gun violence claimed the life of her younger brother on the streets of Philadelphia. His loss made the crisis facing families and communities painfully personal. Tramaine understood the grief left behind, the futures changed in an instant, and the urgent need to reach youth before violence, incarceration, and hopelessness determine the course of their lives.
Through every season of grief, her faith remained an anchor. Pain deepened her compassion, strengthened her resolve, and ultimately became part of her purpose.
Her journey also led her to Ghana, where family connection, cultural learning, and meaningful relationships revealed a shared truth across both nations: greatness lives within the next generation, but gifts must be nurtured and opportunities must be created. The connection between Greater Philadelphia and Ghana became central to a vision of emerging leaders learning from one another, celebrating their heritage, and building stronger futures together.
Hands of Joy International grew from that vision. Through mentorship, leadership development, cultural connection, and transformative opportunities, the organization helps future leaders discover their worth, strengthen their voices, and walk boldly in their purpose.
Tramaine's story is the beginning, but the mission reaches far beyond one life. It is a commitment to help the next generation rise with hope, lead with courage, and create a legacy of impact for generations to come.
Pain can become purpose. Grief can become impact. Loss can become legacy.

Our Story
The work began with a simple observation.
Across Greater Philadelphia, talented teens are surrounded by capability. Talent is abundant. Access to relationships, exposure, and opportunity remains uneven.
Hands of Joy International formed to help open those doors during the years that shape the rest of a life. We build small leadership cohorts, consistent mentorship and a leadership development framework that treats participants as the decision-makers they are becoming.
From the beginning, the work has stretched across two nations. Emerging leaders in Greater Philadelphia and Ghana learn together, lead together and see themselves reflected in a wider world.

Who We Serve
Emerging leaders across Greater Philadelphia and partner communities in Ghana, with priority for those whose access to mentorship and opportunity is limited.
Why We Exist
Potential lives everywhere. Our work helps open doors to opportunity through prevention, mentorship and leadership development.
Leadership Philosophy
Young people are active partners and emerging leaders in everything we build. Adults create structure, safety and access; youth carry the vision forward.
Two Nations
Philadelphia and Ghana, as equals.
Both communities contribute as equal partners in one shared mission, offering leadership, culture and perspective to one another.
